STAR STUDENTS: We had 5 star students last week in our class this week. The kids came in every morning and asked who the star student was that day…they were so excited!! Starting next week the kinders are excited to bring home Lucky (our classroom stuffed dog) for the night!! I have Lucky at home this weekend getting him rested and ready for a fun week next week. I will choose sticks randomly each day to see who is the “lucky” one! Here are pictures of our star students this week…

POPCORN WORDS: ME    BE    WE    WILL    BLACK    WHITE

The kinders were excited to see that our popcorn words rhymed (at least 3 of them). We found these words inside our daily message and found them in our popcorn word books! We read Harry the Dirty Dog books and had fun making a Harry craft! The kinders wrote popcorn words to complete the sentence “Harry is a white and black  dog.” We had fun dressing up in our black and white clothes today too! We also had fun drawing on black paper with white crayons!

HANDWRITING: This week we began practicing writing our letters in our handwriting books. The kinders are excited to use these books and are practicing the correct way to make their letters.

MATH:  We have been warming up our brains before we start our math lesson with a song. This week we had fun listening to Cowboy Count to 100 by 1’s by Jack Hartmann. The kinders loved singing and dancing along (and practicing counting too)!! We took our first Math test this week.  The kinders felt so important when they got to use their own “office” (a folder separating them from their neighbor) while taking their test.  I will share these tests with you at conferences.  I am amazed at how well the kinders are doing!! Thank you for working and supporting them at home. We will begin working on Unit 2 next week. We also had fun playing some math games this week. The 8th graders came over from Baldwin Street Middle School and played number Bingo with the kinders and fun math games that practiced number sense.

During math this week, we also had fun sorting shapes using food!! We sorted square Chex Cereal, triangle shaped Bugles, circle shaped Cheerios, straight line pretzels. The kinders sorted the shapes and then got to enjoy munching on the snacks!!

WRITER’S WORKSHOP:  In writing we wrote all about our specials….art, STEAM, gym and music.  We begin writing by telling a story, drawing a picture together, labeling the picture and coming up with a sentence about the picture. Then the kinders independently draw their own pictures, add labels and together we trace words in a sentence that tell about the picture.

READER’S WORKSHOP:  During readers workshop we practice reading to self before we read with a partner.  When we read with a partner we sit EEKK (elbow to elbow and knee to knee) as we share books.  When we read with our partner, we learned that we can share our favorite part of a book, something cool and interesting and something we didn’t know. As you read books at home, you can practicing using these strategies too.

Split Lit: During the morning, we practice our literacy skills during split lit groups. The kids love to play games and while playing, they are getting extra practice on many literacy skills. It is so exciting to see them learn!

Free Choice: The kinders love to have free choice time!! This week we enjoyed playing with attribute blocks, geo-boards, Legos, Mega Blocks, lacing and creativity station. It is so fun to see the kids use their imaginations and get to know their classmates during free choice time!

Mystery Reader: We enjoyed having a Mystery Reader this week!! Lauren’s dad read us the book Officer Buckle and Gloria by Peggy Rathmann. We had so much fun listening to the story and it was really fun to see how excited Lauren was to see her dad!! Lauren’s dad is a police officer and came dressed in his uniform…the kids got to ask questions all about police officers! Deputy Schaller even brought his cop car, started the lights for us to see and let the kids sit in it…they had so much fun!!!
