This Week in Kindergarten…

POPCORN WORDS: WHO, NOT

MATH: This week in math, we took our math test. The Kinders used their “offices” to do their own work and show what they know! We then started our new unit in math and our worked in our new math workbooks. We started by visiting a “grocery store” in our math books and added up the fruit and vegetables that we bought. We grouped the fruits and vegetables by color. We also continued practicing writing math equations this week. We are getting so good at it!! We also had to find Puzzled Penguins mistake…ask your Kinders about Puzzled Penguin, they really like him!

MATH GAMES: On Friday, we had fun playing math games! Our math games were heart themed and the Kinders did a great job playing them! We had to put numbers in order, roll a dice and add to find 1 more or subtract to find 1 less, color heart patterns, search our room and add up the hearts we found.

READING: In reading this week, we learned about Punky Pelican and Jabber the Reteller. Punky helps us, as readers, to pay attention to punctuation and make it show in our voice. We practiced making our voice go up and down depending on punctuation. Jabber helps us, as readers, to remember to retell the story we read. We practiced retelling what happened in the beginning, the middle and the end. We re-read a Pete the Cat book we read earlier in the year and then had to retell the book in order of what Pete stepped in while wearing his shoes.

WRITING: This week in writing we wrote an On Demand writing piece. This is when the Kinders need to do their own writing without help from their teacher. They practiced telling their story across their fingers, sketching their pictures, adding labels to their pictures, adding words (and stretching them out all on their own), using capital letters and punctuation. Wow…that is a lot of work!! They worked so hard!!

PRESIDENT’S DAY: On Monday, we celebrated President’s Day! We read and talked about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. We made our own book to take home about these Presidents. On Friday, we made a president craft. It had George Washington on one side and when you flipped it over it was Abraham Lincoln.

SPLIT LIT: We practiced our literacy skills during split lit this week. We were able to practice some skills on our own and some with either Mrs. Baker or Mrs. Bromley.

MAPS: We learned about maps this week. We looked at maps and talked about maps and made our own map book. In our map book, we put our address, including the numbers of our house, our street name and the city we live in. The Kinders loved seeing the big map of the United States in our classroom! They had fun showing the class different states that they’ve heard of and the people they know that live/visit there!

POST OFFICE PLAY: On Monday we were excited to see our new dramatic play center had been changed into a…post office!! There are a lot of fun things in our post office…boxes, postcards, birthday cards, envelopes, stamps, a mailbox and a bag to deliver the mail. Wow!! It was fun!!

MICHAEL’S 100 COLLECTION: Michael was back this week after being sick last week. We were happy he was able to share his 100’s day collection of Lego’s with us.

MYSTERY READERS: This week we had 2 mystery readers! Ian’s cousin came to our school (after he was finished with his school) to read to us! He read us No David! We all had a lot of good laughs!! Miles’ grandma also surprised us this week and visited our classroom and read us The Creepy Pair of Underwear. We had heard this book before, but that was fine with us! Everyone enjoyed hearing it again! Miles’ grandma made us a white chocolate bunny as treat.

On Friday, we had 2 friends in our class lose a tooth!! Zachary and Logan both lost teeth!!
