This Week in Kindergarten…

POPCORN WORDS: come, some

This week we practiced finding our popcorn words in our morning message. We also looked for capital letters and punctuation in our morning message. We did some other popcorn word practice during our split lit time.

READING: In reading this week, we practiced making connections to the characters we read about in books. We used different Franklin books and had fun making connections to Franklin. We asked ourselves the question, “Has that ever happened to me?” We had to put a sticky note by the picture that has happened to us…Has something special broke? Have you ever got or wanted a pet? We had fun telling our reading partners about our connections.

WRITING: In writing this week, we finished up our last week of writing how-to’s. The Kinders worked hard on writing their very own how-to’s this week. They came up with their own idea, drew a sketch (and added labels), wrote the steps in order, wrote the words. Then they checked to make sure their sentences started with capital letters and ended with punctuation. They did a great job writing all by themselves!! Way to go Kinders!!

MATH: In math this week, we practiced writing equations using Anno’s Counting Book. We used this book to look at the pictures and added more of something. We drew the pictures on  our whiteboards and then wrote the equation to match. We also made a “Night Sky” in our classroom with stars. The stars are arranged to make partners of tens. The Kinders are getting really good at recognizing partners of ten!

OUTSTANDINGS: Two girls from our class were awarded with OUTSTANDINGS this week. They represent our class with the best qualities of BE NICE…WORK HARD…LEARN WELL! Congratulations to Charlotte and Violet!! We are proud of you!!

FUN WITH ROCKS: We had a fun this week with our rocks! We read some books about rocks this week and learned about the different types of rocks. We even “made” our own Sedimentary and Igneous rocks out of Starburst!! We learned about using heat and pressure to make rocks and used heat (our warm hands) and pressure (our muscles) to “make” our own rocks. We looked at all of our rocks that we brought in and investigated them. We sorted our rocks by color, size, texture (bumpy/smooth). We measured how big around our rocks were (we even used yarn and a ruler). We measured how long on rocks were using cubes. Our favorite thing we did was to see if our rocks would sink or float in water. We made predictions and then put the rock in to water. Next week we are going to continue to learn a little bit more about rocks…we still have another type of rock to “make” and we are going to make our very own fossils!!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO 5TH GRADE IVY…we are so happy you help us in our classroom!!

8TH GRADE HELPERS: We have 8th grade helpers that come to our classroom every Thursday morning to help our. They help us with different things…sight words, writing and learning games. We like it when they come to our room!
