This Week in Kindergarten…

Reading: In reading this week, we practiced building our stamina as readers. The Kinders are getting really good at reading the whole time! We also practiced reading with partners…strengthening our Partner Power!

Writing: In writing this week, we finished our opinion writing. The Kinders practiced their opinion writing, by choosing their favorite pet to write about. They also made an opinion about Georgetown Elementary and wrote about it. The Kinders had a lot of fun trying 2 different kinds of mints and forming an opinion and writing about which they like best. Then, they wrote about it! We finished the week by the Kinders taking their writing test. We call this on-demand writing. For this on-demand writing, the Kinders had to write about their favorite restaurant and give their opinion on why it’s the best!

Math: In math this week, we kept working on tiny tumblers, adding and subtracting, teen numbers and learning about greater and less. I’m very proud of how hard they are working on their math skills and how much they are learning!

Split Lit: We practiced our reading skills during different split lit stations this week!

American Symbols: We started to learn about American symbols this week. We learned about the American Flag, the Bald Eagle and the Liberty Bell. We will continue to learn more American symbols next week.

Red, White and Blue Day Fun! We had a lot of fun on Friday celebrating red, white and blue day! We played American symbol math games! The Kinders enjoyed red, white and blue popsicles, made adorable Flag headbands, waved mini American Flags and went on a parade around the school. We even had the 4th and 5th graders cheering for us as we walked by!

READING: In reading this week, we reviewed using our pointer power when we read. The Kinders practiced making sure they were pointing to the words as they read, making sure they are reading every word that is written…not skipping or adding any words. They had fun wearing the pointer power rings when they read.

WRITING: In writing this week, we worked more on opinion writing. The Kinders practiced stating their opinion and backing up their opinions with reasons. They even had to write a closing sentence. They are getting a lot of practice at writing opinion papers!

MATH: In math this week, we worked on finding partners of ten, telling if numbers are equal or not equal and practicing addition and subtraction equations. We also practiced drawing teen numbers…a group of 10 and some extra ones. We always like it when we get to practice our math skills on white boards!

MYSTERY READER: Juliet’s dad surprised us this Friday by being a mystery reader in our class. Juliet was so excited to see him. He had all of the Kinder’s attention, they loved listening to the book about pirates called How I Became a Pirate!

LIVING AND NON-LIVING: We have been learning about things that are living and non-living. We did some fun activities this week to be able to tell the difference. We ended our study by taking a nature walk and founds things outside our school that were living and things that were non-living. We have been trying to grow our lima bean plants. Popcorn Words: by, my, one

Reading: In reading this week, we learned more about characters. We focused on finding out who the strong characters were in our books. We read some Little Critter books and Mercy Watson. We have been enjoying Mercy Watson books during our read aloud time. This week we talked about Mercy as a character and the other fun characters in the Mercy Watson books. We have read 3 chapter books and look forward to starting a new one next week! It is one of the Kinder’s favorite times of the day! Ask your Kinder who Mercy is and what Mercy likes to eat!

Writing: In writing this week we practiced writing our opinions. I hope you’ve had fun reading their opinion writing that has come home! They got to choose and write their opinions about… If they liked hot lunch or home lunch…Going to the beach or the pool…Which season do they like best, winter or summer. They are doing a great job deciding on their opinion (even when they really like both), coming up with reasons to support what they choose and writing a closing.

Math: In math this week we practiced partners of ten using pennies. We had a fun little rhyming song we sang to help us learn the partners of ten. We practiced doing addition and subtraction like big kids (where we challenged ourselves to see how many we could do in a minute). We also continued learning more about partners of different numbers and practicing our tiny tumblers. I am so proud of all the hard work they do in math!

Science: We had fun on our fast Friday learning about Living and Nonliving things. I was so impressed with what they knew! We colored and read a book all about living and nonliving things. We also chose an animal and talked about where it lives (its home), the air it breathes, the food it eats and the water it drinks. We have enjoyed watching our living caterpillars change into beautiful butterflies right in front of our eyes! We are patiently waiting for our plants to start growing!

Outstanding: This week Kenzie was awarded with an OUTSTANDING from Mrs. Reagan! Kenzie does a great job of reminding us to BE NICE, WORK HARD, LEARN WELL! We are proud of you!

Our field trip today at Hemlock Nature Center was AWESOME!!  However, with our day of nature always comes those little critters we need to mindful of.  Ticks!

As a staff we always give the good once over to look for any little hitchhikers.  However,  these little “friends” love to find spots to hide out that we aren’t allowed to search.  So maybe tonight is a bath night and an extensive once over would be helpful for Tick safety. I have attached the link from the CDC on Ticks.  Please let me know if you have any questions OR if you did see any hitchhikers (Ticks).

This Week in Kindergarten…

POPCORN WORDS: have, of, on

READING: In reading this week, we continued studying characters in our books. We learned that the same characters can be in more than one book. We also learned that there can be more than one strong character in a book. We practiced finding the characters that are the strong characters.

WRITING: In writing this week, we started our opinion writing. We started by talking about the differences between facts and opinions. We read books about opinions…I Wanna New Room and I Wanna Iguana. We sorted sentences by reading them, then determining if they were a fact or an opinion. Then we had to come up with 2 reasons why we like our ice cream that way and write those reasons. This week we will continue to learn more about opinion writing.
