This Week in Kindergarten…

POPCORN WORDS: am, are, little

READING: The kinders are doing a fabulous job during our reading time! This week we learned that readers work hard to help themselves solve problems. We use pictures to help remind us of the story we are reading, which is very helpful. They are doing such an amazing job at telling stories! It is exciting to see them recognize words in their books…yay!! Many are noticing there are words we might know to help us tell the story.

MATH: This week in math, we learned how to count the teen numbers by showing fast freeze 10 and some extra ones. We also added 1 to numbers 1-9 to make numbers.  It was fun using pennies to show numbers, each time adding 1 to numbers on our blue math mats. They noticed the pattern that occurs when you add these numbers, learning that each answer gets bigger by one. This week, we also practiced adding things together that we drew on white boards, shapes and writing numbers.

WRITING: This week in writing, we looked closely at two different objects. We used magnifying glasses to zoom in on pinecones and gourds. The Kinders love being “scientists” and looking at all the parts of the objects they are studying. They are doing a great job with labels and adding a sentence or two to their writing, using some of our popcorn words.

SPLIT LIT: During split lit this week, we rotated to 5 different stations. We practiced our popcorn words with many fun activities. We painted our popcorn words with the do-a-dots, we practiced rainbow writing them in our journals, we found words in the -am word family, practiced beginning word sounds, practiced writing our letters, read with whisper phones and worked on our popcorn word books. Split lit is one of the Kinders favorite times of day!

MYSTERY READERS: We were so lucky to have 2 mystery readers this week! On Thursday, Haddie’s dad came through the door and surprised Haddie! She was so happy to see him. We had fun listening to the story Giraffes Can’t Dance! On Friday, Gabby’s dad surprised Gabby when he came through the door and read us a Berenstain Bears book! It is so fun to have mystery readers! Thank you for taking time to come and read to us!
