This Week in Kindergarten…

POPCORN WORDS: or, for

READING: During reading this week, we did a GREAT job of working with our partners.  The kinders explored different ways that illustrators and authors show or write how characters feel.  They labeled feelings that they found in books.  Then shared what they found with their partners.  We even labeled important words, characters and parts in stories.

WRITING: During writing this week, we finished up writing like a scientist. The Kinders had fun writing about a gummy worm…and then of course getting to eat it! They also investigated and wrote about colorful feathers. They are doing such a great job adding labels and stretching out the sounds they hear in the labels and words they are writing. I am so proud of them!

MATH: During math this week, we worked on identifying shapes, focusing on triangles and hexagons. We sang a song about hexagons to help us remember the number of sides a hexagon has. We also compared and wrote numbers 1-10 and practiced telling addition and subtraction math stories.

LITERACY: At our literacy stations (split lit) this week, we had fun exploring and learning literacy skills. The kids are doing a great job with their independent stations as well as working with a teacher.

SOCIAL STUDIES: We worked hard on learning all about WANTS and NEEDS this week. The Kinders have had fun sorting things we want and things we need. We even watched The Berenstain Bears Get the Gimmies to help us learn.

MYSTERY READER: Gabby was so excited when her mom walked through the door to be our mystery reader. Gabby got to help her mom choose what story to read. Gabby chose a Berenstain Bears story…some of our favorite characters in our class!

PE CARES:  Thank you SO MUCH for donating to our PE Cares Food Drive!!  Our class donated over 50 items to the cause!!  The Kinders LOVED carrying the donations down to PE!

VETERAN’S DAY: We learned about Veteran’s and what they have done. We read a Scholastic News all about them and did a Veteran craft.

STONE SOUP: This book is a family favorite in my house.  The Kinders enjoyed reading the story Stone Soup by Ann McGovern.  They also enjoyed adding the ingredients to the pot to make our own Stone Soup.  At the end of the day, we got to try the soup if we wanted.  We had quite a few friends who liked the soup and some who did not! It was so fun to share this classic tale with them.  As the story says, “Soup from a stone, imagine that!”
