This Week in Kindergarten…

Popcorn Words: look, from, run

Reading: During reading this week, we learned that we are SUPER READERS! Super readers use their super reading powers to read words. The super power we practiced using this week was our POINTER POWER! The Kinders practiced pointing to each word one time with their finger. We practiced using our pointer power by pointing to colors and animals and then adding words to the pictures. They each got a finger to use during reading to remind them to point to their words. You can encourage them to use their pointer power when they read at home!

Writing: During writing this week, we continued practicing writing pattern books. We wrote pattern books where the first word in the pattern changes on each page. I am so impressed with how well the Kinders are doing writing pattern books. They are practicing starting each sentence with an uppercase letter, putting a finger space between their words, adding punctuation and labeling.

Math: During math this week, we practiced dot-to-dots, counting and coloring groups of ten items and finding partners of 6. We met TEN BUG…a bug that has ten dots on it and helps us look for groups of ten. The Kinders had fun when ten bug flew around and talked to each of us. Today, the Kinders brought home their unit 2 math test in their blue folders. They did a great job!

Literacy: During our literacy time this week, we practiced many literacy skills. We practiced rhyming, blending sounds together to make words, popcorn word books, reading into our whisper phone and looking for our popcorn words in a poem. We also read the story of The Gingerbread Man and looked for the word man and the word chunk an in the story.

Where in the World is the Gingerbread Man? This week we read The Gingerbread Man Loose in the School. At the end of the story, the Gingerbread Man left us a note that led us on a search for him around the school. Our search ended at the office where the Gingerbread Man had left us a treat. He left us gingerbread cookies! Yum! We went back to our classroom to eat them…and almost all of us liked them! We voted YES or NO if we liked it or not. The Gingerbread Man sent us a postcard saying he traveled to Australia. We had fun learning about all of the things that he was seeing in Australia! We got our passports, got on an airplane (it even sounded like an airplane in our room) and headed to Australia! It was a lot of fun! We are excited to see what other adventures the Gingerbread Man has planned for us!

Mystery Reader: Charles was so excited and surprised when he saw his mom come into our room this week! We had a lot of fun listening to the story she chose to read. We even got to say parts of the book!
