Dr. Seuss Day!

Because March is Reading Month…On Friday, March 1 we are going to be celebrating Dr. Seuss! We will be having a lot of fun with all things Dr. Seuss! If your Kinder would like to add to the fun by dressing up…that would be great! I’d love to have them dress up Dr. Seuss style! Looking forward to a fun-filled day!!

This Week in Kindergarten…

Popcorn Words: who, not

Reading: During reading this week, we learned that PATTERN POWER doesn’t only help you read the words in books but patterns can also help you think about your whole book. We had fun reading Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons. The pattern repeated on each page, with one word changing. It is so exciting to see the Kinders noticing the things they are learning in their books as they are reading to themselves!

Math: In math this week, we practiced identifying and counting shapes. We reviewed and took our unit 3 test. The Kinders went into their “offices” and took their test. They worked so hard on it! I’m so proud of them!

Writing: During writing this week, we continued writing small moment stories. This week we practiced telling 2 different stories across our fingers, telling it to a friend, drawing the pictures in order and then adding the words. The two stories we wrote about were our Valentine party and snack time. The Kinders practiced writing the words on their own! This was a challenge, but they did it! We know that…WE CAN DO THINGS THAT ARE HARD! OUR BRAINS ARE LIKE A MUSCLE THAT GROWS!

Presidents’ Day: On Monday, we celebrated Presidents’ Day. We learned some interesting facts about two famous Presidents, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. The Kinders had fun learning new things! We also read a book called Duck for President and voted for either Farmer Brown or Duck for President. The majority voted for Duck!

Mystery Reader: This week we were lucky enough to have 3 mystery readers visit our class! Our class gets so excited when a mystery reader comes and reads to us! One of our favorite things is listening to stories!

RJ was super happy to see his granddaddy come through the door to be our mystery reader! He was here visiting from Georgia and came to read to us on Presidents’ Day. He read us an appropriate book to celebrate that day called, Presidents’ Day. He even showed us money with George Washington and Abraham Lincoln on it!

Charlotte was thrilled to see her mom, dad and baby brother Leo come into our classroom as mystery readers! Her mom shared a book with called, Be a Star Wonder Woman. Her dad got to read us a book too. He read, Tallulah Mermaid of the Great Lakes. Baby Leo had fun watching what was going on!

Clete was super excited when he saw his mom walk come through the door as our mystery reader. He was so excited it was her turn to read to our class! She brought a really big book to read to us! It was called, The Little Mouse, The Red Ripe Strawberry and The Big Hungry Bear.

On Friday, the Kinders had a guest teacher. It was exciting because it was one of our Kinder’s moms. Mrs. Occhipinti got to be our teacher for the day! We did a fun penguin craft!

This Week in Kindergarten…

Popcorn Words: now, how

Reading: During reading this week, we focused on finding patterns in our books. We learned that patterns help us figure out words, sound like readers, help us retell a story and make predictions. It was so exciting to watch the Kinders discover patterns in the books they were reading! We also made our own pattern books to practice reading. This week, we also learned about challenging books. Challenging books have…more words and more lines, new words, longer words and surprise endings. We used our reading mats to put our books in order from the easiest books to the hardest and practiced reading all of them. It’s so fun to watch them become readers!

Math: In math this week, we learned about partners of different numbers. We found the partners that add up to a total. We also practiced adding teen numbers, starting with a ten. We had fun using different objects to make teen numbers and then writing the equations that go with it. On Friday, we had fun putting valentine numbers in order counting by ones and by fives. We also used paper hearts and dice to add numbers together.

Writing: During writing this week, we continued writing small moment stories. We each wrote a story about going to library. We told the story by putting the steps in order…First we listen to a book. Next we look for a book. Last we look at it. Then, we added a feeling to our story. We continue to focus on starting our sentences with capital letters and ending our sentences with punctuation.

Literacy: During our literacy centers this week, we learned about our popcorn words how and now. We also practiced reading books and making pattern books that we could read on our own! We learned the different sounds that /ow/ makes. Sometimes it sounds like it does in snow and sometimes it sounds like it does in cow. The Kinders did a great job sorting these sounds.

Mystery Reader: Claire was so excited to see her dad walk through the door as our mystery reader! It was fun to listen to a book about one of our favorite characters…Pete the Cat! We love to have mystery readers visit our class!

Our VETERINARY CENTER (in our dramatic play area) is now open! The Kinders were so excited to see the vet center up and running! They have had so much fun bringing their pets to the vet center and dressing up in scrubs (thanks to grandma Baker for making them this past summer) to help the animals! It is adorable to watch them play!

Valentine’s DayFun!! We had a fun-filled day!! We enjoyed opening our valentine cards and having a super fun party!! We loved the crafts we made and the fun games we played!! Many thanks to all of the parents to that helped and sent in supplies to make our party so enjoyable!!
