This Week in Kindergarten…

POPCORN WORDS: away, play, today, up

READING: During reading this week, the Kinders continued to work on building their reading stamina. They have been doing a great job of reading quietly and practicing their books…using their Super Powers! We read a Scholastic News called Real Rainbow Fish. The Scholastic News talked about fiction (the Rainbow Fish) and non-fiction (the real Rainbow Fish).

MATH: In math this week, we practiced showing teen numbers, representing each number with a group of ten circles and then the extra ones. We also continued our learning about math mountains. The Kinders are getting really good at drawing tiny tumblers to show the numbers on each side of their math mountain. We learned about showing equal groups, by adding shapes and writing the equation to match. The Kinders are continuing to practice their addition and subtraction skills too. I am so proud of them!

WRITING: During writing this week, we continued our learning about fact and opinion. We started the week by giving our opinion on whether we like ice cream in a cone or in a cup. Each day we met with a group that had the same opinion, talked about reasons for their opinion and then went and wrote about it. This week, we had to give 2 reasons to support our opinion. We also wrote our opinions on our favorite sport, favorite special and favorite pet. They are doing a great job with this!

LITERACY: During our literacy time this week, we practiced many skills! We…made popcorn word watches, made lists of friends, read sentences and matched them with pictures, wrote books about anything we chose, matched upper and lowercase letters and practiced letter sounds. This is one of their favorite times of the day!

OUR CATERPILLARS: Wow!! Our caterpillars changed a lot this week! When we got to school on Monday, our 3 the caterpillars were hanging from the top of the cup. There were 2 of them in their chrysalis and one that wasn’t quite there yet. By the end of the week, they were all in a chrysalis. They were transferred from their cup into their

A VISITOR…A SNAKE! On Friday, we had a snake visit our classroom (in a cage). Mrs. Stutz found a snake at her house and shared with our class for the day. The Kinders had so much fun looking at it throughout the day! They loved it when it slithered up the cage!

TAKE HOME BOOKS: Today was our last day of bringing home new take home books. I can’t believe it! The Kinders can read their books to you this weekend and then return them on Monday. Thank you so much to everyone for reading each night at home with your Kinders! They have become such good readers! Thank you so much to all of the parents and grandparents who came to listen to our readers! I couldn’t have done it without you!!!
