Reader’s Workshop…

This week during reader’s workshop, we practiced rereading our books to try to learn more information. We practiced by noticing things in the pictures the first time through the book and then looked through it again, noticing more things.

Writer’s Workshop…

During writer’s workshop this week, the Kinders had to help Mrs. Baker try to draw a picture that was tricky for her. They used their whiteboards to help draw a picture of a campfire. They added many details and got to share on the screen for the whole class to see.

Math…

This week during math, we started learning about addition and subtraction. We started to learn about this by using our foam squares. The Kinders like to get out our math tools and use them to learn. We also used our math tools to compare numbers. We built towers to compare numbers 1-5. We finished up the week by comparing circles and not circles (squares and rectangles).

Literacy…

During our literacy time this week, we continued our ABC Bootcamp. We studied the letters Kk, Ll, Mm and Nn this week. We also broke our class into 2 groups. One of the groups worked on tracing and writing their names and the other group practiced rhyming words.

The Color Blue

This week we learned about the color blue. We practiced writing the word blue, read books with blue characters, found and colored things that are blue and made a blue craft. We made Pete the Cat! They are so cute! They are hanging up in our classroom right now, but I will send them home soon. Enjoy the cute pictures of them!

Little Blue Truck…

We read a great book called Little Blue Truck by Alice Schertle. We had so much fun reading it, we decided to make our own Little Blue Truck! We colored our trucks blue and then added the animals from the story to our picture!

Reader’s Workshop…

This week in reading, we learned about reading by ourselves (private) and reading with partners! The Kinders each have a reading partner that they practiced reading a book with. They sit knee-to-knee and put the book in between the two of them, taking turns noticing things in the book. They practiced reading real world books during partner reading time using a level 1 voice (a whisper voice). We also learned and practiced reading from cover to cover this week. We looked at the front cover, went through all all the pages and read all the way to the back cover. They did a great job and had fun reading together!

Math…

This week during math, we got to use our math trays and tiles. We practiced with the numbers 1-5 and represented each number with number tiles. It was exciting to get to use math trays and show the numbers in different ways. We also drew scenes of 2 and 3. The Kinders drew scenes with groups of 2 things and drew scenes with groups of 3 things. We also got to work in our own math books for the first time this week…yay!

Writer’s Workshop…

During writing this week, the Kinders learned about adding more to their writing. They learned that when writer’s think they are done, they’ve just begun! They gave advice to other people about what they could add to their writing. They even tried writing all by themselves! They are practicing drawing a picture and labeling the picture with the first sound they hear in the word. They even tried writing words…wow!! I am so proud of them, they did a great job!

Literacy…

This week during our literacy time, we continued our ABC Bootcamp. We learned about the letters Gg, Hh, Ii and Jj. We will continue to review letters and learn new ones. We also practiced a shared reading for the first time this week. We read a poem called I See. There were familiar words in the poem (I, see, a). We highlighted the words we know and then put them in our 3 ring binder to practice at school. We also added a paper book to our book boxes, the book included our popcorn words.

Cool Tools…

We continued learning about the tools we can use to help us handle different situations. The tools we learned about this week are the kaleidoscope and a bug and a wish. The kaleidoscope helps us remember to embrace our differences, everyone is different and special! Using a bug and a wish is helpful when we want someone to stop doing something, it helps us to know what to say. We read a book (Howard B. Wigglebottom) about bullying and learned how to handle a bullying situation.

The Color Yellow…

We learned about the color yellow. We practiced writing it, found and colored things that are yellow and made a yellow craft. We made a school bus! We wrote a message on our paper using our popcorn words…I see a yellow bus.

We also learned about positional words this week. We read the book Pete the Cat The Wheels on the Bus and talked about where different things were located in the book. For example, Pete was inside the bus, the kittens were in the back of the bus, the bird was on top of the bus. Then each student got their own Pete the Cat and bus and we practiced putting Pete in different positions.

POPCORN WORD: a

COLOR WORD: red

ABC Bootcamp…

We have been working hard on our letters and sounds the past two weeks in Kindergarten. We started with the letter A and have made it through the letter F. We will continue to learn more letters next week!

A Special Visitor…

We had a special visitor come and teach us about type 1 diabetes. One of the Kinders in our class, Lillian, has type 1 diabetes. Her dad read us a book and introduced us to Coco, a monkey that helped us learn more about Lilly.

Readers Workshop…

During our first reading workshop lesson, the kinders learned that readers walk through the world in a special way.  They don’t just see things, they read things too!  We learned that we are readers and can already read different signs in our school, in our classroom and out in our world!  The kinders were excited know that they were able to read familiar environmental print signs. We are learning to LOOK, READ, THINK, LEARN!

We also talked about what it means to be a “Book Lover”.  We learned that a book lover takes care of their books by being gentle with them, not eating or using supplies around them and putting them back where we got them from.  We practiced being a book lover with books at our table spot.

Math…

This week in math, we read Anno’s Counting Book. We talked about the numbers 1-10 and looked on the book pages for objects that corresponded to that number.

We explored with our math manipulatives! The kinders were introduced to the number tiles 1-5 and counters.  We counted a group of objects and found different ways to arrange them.  For example: 5 can be shown with 3 red tile and 2 blue tiles or 5 can be shown with 4 red tiles and 1 blue tiles.

Writers’ Workshop…

This week during writing, we learned that writer’s share information with others about what they know. We had a partner that we turned and talked to. One of the Kinders was the peanut butter partner and the other was the jelly partner. The peanut butter partner was the listener first and the jelly partner was the one that shared first. Then, they switched. In our class, we practiced sharing things we know about. We told our partners what our favorite color is and what we like to play on the playground. We also started “writing” on paper this week by drawing ourselves lining up (this is something we are practicing). The Kinders needed to draw and label themselves. We will continue adding to our writing this week.

SOAR…

As a class we are learning how to SOAR- Be Safe, Own It, Act Responsibly and Be Respectful at school!  This week we learned about noise levels.  We practiced these noise levels in the hallway, in the classroom and outside.

The Color Red…

On Friday, we celebrated our color of the week, the color red. The Kinders looked great in their red clothes. We had fun making a red craft, talking about things that are red, reading books with the color red in them and learning a song about the word red.

Meet Our Para-Pros…

We are so very lucky to have Mrs. Santana and Mrs. DeGroot helping in our class this year. Mrs. Santana is with us in the mornings and Mrs. DeGroot is with us part of the afternoon. We are very thankful for their help! If your Kinders mention them, you’ll know who they are talking about!

Cool Tools…

We are continuing to learn about “COOL TOOLS” in kindergarten. These are tools that help us to learn how to handle different situations and talk to others. This week we learned…
