This Week in Kindergarten…

POPCORN WORDS: to, do, you

READER’S WORKSHOP: This week during reading, we continued on with telling some our favorite stories! The Kinders are learning to sound exactly like the characters in some of our favorites while they are reading their books! They are also learning to use the picture when reading their books. Each of the Kinders got their own Three Billy Goats Gruff book to practice reading and sounding like the characters. The Three Billy Goats Gruff and Elephant and Piggie books are quickly becoming some of our favorites!

WRITER’S WORKSHOP: During writing this we focused on show and tell. We started by showing a favorite class stuffed animal – Pete the Cat and then telling everything we noticed about Pete. We practiced the same thing with another favorite stuffed friend, Gerald (from the Elephant and Piggie books). Finally, the Kinders pulled their object out of their black bag, told their partner about it and then they were asked to draw and label it.  Labeling is tricky but we are learning to stretch words slowly and write all of the sounds that we hear.  Thank you for participating!

MATH: In math this week, we practiced writing our numbers. Some numbers sure can be tricky to write! We also helped Puzzled Penguin (a confused penguin in our math books who always makes a mistake…the Kinders love him) figure out the correct answer to his math problem. We practiced identifying groups of numbers and telling addition and subtraction stories.

MATH GAMES WITH THE GVSU BASEBALL PLAYERS: On Friday, the GVSU baseball players and two of their coaches were back and taught us some new math games. We practiced seeing a number and counting that many objects of the number. We did this by making Play Doh cookies, putting sprinkles on donuts and by adding the correct number of candles to cakes. The Kinders are really enjoying them coming to our room and helping us learn! You can tell the baseball players enjoy it too!

LITERACY: During our literacy time this week, we focused on the letters Ss, Tt, Uu, Vv. We also distinguished between letters, words and sentences and worked on understanding the differences between these. We also matched upper and lower case letters.

THE COLOR GREENWe did many fun activities with the color green this week. We enjoyed reading many Froggy books…the Kinders are having fun starting to know the language of the books and are reading along with me. We listened to the story Little Blue and Little Yellow. Then we each got a ball of yellow Play Doh and a ball of blue Play Doh and from that made green Play Doh. The Kinders loved it! We also practiced writing the word green, noticing things that are green and made adorable green frogs!

FIREFIGHTER’S VISIT: It was wonderful to have firefighters Rich, Rob and Kent visit us on Wednesday. Mrs. Stutz’s and Mrs. Baker’s Kinders joined classes and they all looked great in their fire dog ears and learned so much from the visit. It was too bad that it was raining, but the Kinders got to check out the fire truck from the windows.

Here are some of the fire safety tips that we learned:

  • Check the smoke detectors in your house to make sure they work properly. Change the batteries yearly.
  • Go outside!  Talk about a safety plan for your family in case of a fire – where is your meeting spot?
  • Call 911 immediately!
  • Do not play with matches or lighters– they are dangerous and can cause fires! They are tools for grown-ups only!
  • If a part of your clothing or your body catches on fire, STOP, DROP, and ROLL.
