This Week in Kindergarten…

POPCORN WORDS: said, make

READING: This week during reading, the kindergarteners learned that they need to check their reading. They need to ask themselves, does this make sense? If it doesn’t, they need to try to fix it. We also learned about looking for patterns in books. The Kinders color coded some pattern reading. I hope they read it to you at home! We finished off the week by using letter-sound knowledge to help them when they are trying to read unknown words. We looked at the picture and the first letter/sound to figure out the tricky word. They did a great job! The Kinders had a lot of fun with their partners reading ABC books! I’m so proud of them, they are working hard!

WRITING: During writing this week, we continued practicing how-to papers. We started using some new how-to paper and wrote whole papers. We wrote about how-to make cookies, how-to brush your teeth and how-to make a bowl of cereal. The Kinders are getting more and more comfortable writing how-to papers, trying a little more on their own each time. Way to go Kinders!

MATH: This week during math, we worked hard on building teen numbers and noticing 5-groups. When we found 5-groups, we circled them…making them stand out to us.  We finished the week by learning more about teen numbers. We practiced adding 10 + a number (1-9) = a teen number. It was fun to practice making teen numbers by using marshmallows and doing hot chocolate math. We also wrote equations totaling teen numbers. For example, 10 + 7 = 17. They had fun, did great and got to eat the marshmallows! Yum!

THE MITTEN: On Friday, we had hearing the story The Mitten by Jan Brett. We listened to the story and retold the story using pictures. Then we had fun making a mitten craft!

LITERACY: During literacy this week, the kindergarteners practiced many skills in their literacy tubs. They matched up rhyming word puzzles, practiced writing popcorn words, practiced writing their names (with an uppercase letter at the start and then lowercase letters), and finding beginning word sounds. I’m so proud of the hard work they are doing!

MYSTERY READER: Hazel and Ruby were so excited when their sister, Macy, walked through our door and surprised them as a mystery reader! Macy read us a fun story called, The Pigeon Needs a Bath! We love pigeon books, so that book was perfect! It was fun to have Macy (a third grader) visit our classroom!

POPCORN AND A MOVIE: On Friday, we celebrated earning 5 stars!! Yay…way to go Kinders!! We watched a Franklin the Turtle movie and also had fun watching the popcorn “pop” in the air popper. The kids loved watching the popcorn spill out into a bowl!! Next week, we are going to use the popping popcorn to write a how-to paper. 🙂
