Third Day of Kindergarten!

This morning we practiced our crayon skills by trying our best to color within the lines. This is tricky, but we worked hard on it!!

We had another exciting day in kindergarten! We started our day by re-reading Pete the Cat Rocking In My School Shoes. Pete the Cat is becoming a fast favorite of ours! After reading the book, we made our own Pete the Cat shoes. We practiced our cutting skills (after learning the rules about scissors) and our gluing skills (after learning the rules about glue sticks). We even got to put stickers on the shoes and draw shoelaces. It was a fun activity!

We learned our second COOL TOOL lesson. We read the book Chrysanthemum and learned that words spoken hurt other’s feelings and are impossible to take back, like toothpaste. We learned that we are all special and unique and then “brushed” away hurtful words with real toothpaste.

We had a lot of fun reading a book called Interrupting Chicken! It was a silly book, but had a good lesson…we have to be listeners during learning time and not an Interrupting Chicken!! We did a coloring paper to go along with our book.

We used two new tools for the first time this week. We used chalkboards and chalk. As a class, we practiced writing the number 0 and 1. We also drew 1 flower to go along with the number. The kids were excited to use the chalkboards, some of the kinders said they had even heard of a chalkboard before. 🙂

We had three friends in our class get recognized for summer learning. They were given an award to bring home and share with their family and one to hang up outside our classroom. There was a random drawing that gave a student in each grade a prize. The winner was RJ from our class…yay RJ!! He was so excited to get his Amazon gift card.

Another exciting thing that happened today was that Eliana lost her tooth on the bus on the way to school!! She was so excited!!

Have a wonderful and safe holiday weekend! I will look forward to seeing your sweet kiddos on Tuesday!!       ~Mrs. Baker

Second Day of Kindergarten!

We had another great day in kindergarten!! We had a lot of fun playing with Play-Dough after we learned the rules of Play-Dough of course. We are now Play-Dough Certified!! It’s official!! We reviewed our crayon rules today and since we are all doing such a great job with crayons, we are also Crayon Certified!! Yay!! Look for their awards in their blue folders.

Today we started the first of our COOL TOOL lessons. These are lessons that teach us how to be good friends and how to handle different situations. We even keep our cool tools in a tool box. Today we read the book The Rainbow Fish and learned that our words matter. We learned that we need to be like an ERASER and forgive ourselves for mistakes that we make and learn from them. We also need to forgive others too who may say or do hurtful things to us. We colored a picture of a rainbow fish…and even got a shimmery and shiny scale to put on it!

We re-read our book called Lining Up and Walking in the Hallway. This book helps us remember the rules for how to walk in the hallway. Today, we did an amazing job following the hallway rules!! Way to go Kinders!!

This afternoon, we drew a picture of ourselves and wrote our name. I am saving this paper at school for now, but you’ll get to have it eventually. 🙂

The kinders had some fun playing with some math manipulatives today also. They were able to create whatever they wanted to!!

I am excited for another fun-filled day tomorrow!!

First Day of Kindergarten!

We had an amazing first day of kindergarten!! It was so fun to see all of the smiling faces today!! We learned a lot of routines…wow…there’s a lot of things to learn!! We read a book called Pete the Cat Rocking in My School Shoes. This book lead us on a tour of the school, searching for Pete the Cat. We found the lunchroom, music room, gym, STEAM studio room, art room, library and even met our secretaries in the office. They are so nice!! We never found Pete the Cat, but had fun looking for him!!

We learned that Pete the Cat tells us “It’s All Good”. We don’t need to worry about things, it’ll be ok!! We had fun making Pete the Cat first day of kindergarten headbands.

We met our bus buddies today too! Mrs. Greenlund’s 4th grade class came to our class to meet us. We were excited about this!

Thank you for sharing your sweet kinder with me, I’m looking forward to another great day in kindergarten tomorrow!! A couple more fun recess pictures…

A Couple Reminders…

What you will need for Tuesday:

  • Thank you for getting back to me about transportation going home!! It makes me feel better to know how your sweet kiddo is getting home.
  • Your child’s ME Bag with two items inside that will help us get to know him/her better. If you were not at open house, please just use a paper lunch bag (or any bag that isn’t clear) you have at home.
  • Completed forms for the office (found in the yellow envelope).
  • GYM Shoes!!! (we will have PE/Gym  on Thursday)
  • HOME LUNCH/drink – OR, if you’ll be ordering HOT LUNCH, be sure your kinder knows what lunch he/she will be ordering (white or blue).  See the August lunch menu for lunch options.
  • Name tag.  There were 2 inside the folder are to be worn on Day 1 (Tuesday) and Day 2 (Wednesday) of school.  Send them wearing their name tags.  My name is also on the name tags which will help get them to our classroom on these busy mornings!  I do plan to be outside the first couple weeks a few minutes before the bell rings to ease any fears.

You can check out the Hudsonville Food Service website (listed under the side of our blog under “helpful links”) for payment information including the option of setting up an online lunch account (highly recommended!)  If your kinder will be having home lunch but ordering MILK, attaching a small note on the outside of their lunch box would help me out a TON for the first few weeks of school.  This helps me and them remember they would like milk.

Lunch ordering is brand new for most of the Kindergartners.  I will be helping them learn the process and soon they will be professional lunch orderers!  It will help me and them if you could have some discussion on what they are having for lunch daily (home lunch, blue or white lunch choice).  Often times a note telling me which lunch choice your child would like can help.  Until your kiddo gets used to the routines.

Remember, at this age, these little ones often get their cues from parents and adults around us.  If we get emotional and cry….they will too.  The more excited and reassuring you can be with your child the better.  I truly LOVE what I do and will definitely be calming any fears that may happen.   Whether it be a loving hand to hold, distraction or hugs of reassurance.

What if it rains?

If it is raining on Tuesday morning, feel free to walk your child to our outside classroom door L (this is where they will be coming in every morning). If you prefer to walk him/her to the school lobby and say good-bye, you may. Then, your kinder will be walked down to our classroom by staff in our building.

Feel free to contact me with ANY questions you have!!  Thanks again for sharing your amazing child with me this year!!

Excited for tomorrow…Mrs. Baker  🙂

Oops…Let’s try this again…
