This Week in Kindergarten…

Popcorn Words: do, to, you

Color Word: Purple

Reading: This week during reading, we continued learning about our favorite stories. The students are learning to sound exactly like the characters in some of our favorites while they are reading their books! We also learned that one way to make our old favorite storybooks sound more grown-up is to read the words that make the pages go together. You read one page and then put in connecting words like: then, after that, etc. We also practiced finding sight words we may know in our books and trying to sound exactly like the characters in our books!

Writing: In writing this week, we were super excited to show and tell our item from home in our writing! The students pulled their object out of their brown bag, told their partner about it and then they were asked to draw and label it.  Labeling is tricky but we are learning to stretch words slowly and write all of the sounds that we hear. We did the same thing with our friend stuffed friend Mabel from our class!

Math: During math this week, we focused on writing numbers 1-5. We learned that writing a 5 can be a bit tricky! The students are learning that 5 is a small down, curve and a slide at the top. We are using Peterson’s Handwriting Language when making our letters and numbers. We also compared sets of numbers and drew objects for the number 4 and 5. Next week, we will have our very first math test to assess the skills that we have learned.

ABC Bootcamp: We learned about the letters P, Q, R, S. We talked about what the letters look like, practiced making the letter sounds, writing the letters, learned about and colored things that start with that letter.

Bus Safety: This week we had two Hudsonville bus drivers come and teach us all about bus safety! We learned the rules for getting on and off the bus and being safe while on the bus and crossing the street. The Kinders did a great job remembering to sit bottom to bottom, back to back on the bus!
