This Week in Kindergarten…

POPCORN WORDS: away, play, up

READING: This week during reading, we learned that Characters Perform! We read a script of The Little Red Hen. Each student chose which part they would like to practice and eventually perform. We even made a barn for our backdrop during play time!

In order to get really good at our parts we practiced…

  • taking turns reading the script
  • sounding like real characters when we read
  • watching for punctuation
  • using our face and body to become the character

WRITING: During writing this week, we wrote another small moment story. This time we wrote it all by ourselves! We started the week by thinking of a story that is absolutely true and all about you. We told the story to ourselves and then to a friend (what happened first, next and last). We drew a quick sketch of the beginning, the middle and the end on sticky notes. Then we started writing our story! We made a cover page, a beginning, middle and end. We added pictures and labels to our writing and did our best work! We ended the week reading our own writing – each student read their story to Mrs. Baker.

MATH: This week during math we finished up our last math unit! Wow! It’s hard to believe we have worked our way through two math work books this year! We reviewed for our last math test and then took our last math test. Look for those coming home soon. We will continue to review math skills for the rest of the school year.

LITERACY/PHONICS: During literacy and phonics time this week, the Kinders did literacy centers on their own again! I am so proud of how hard the kindergarteners worked during this time of our day! These are some things they worked on…

  • writing our color words
  • learning binders
  • writing popcorn words on special mats
  • lacing letters and numbers
  • painting, writing and finding the word away
  • making a “play” watch

MYSTERY READER…Flynn was so excited when his sister (a second grader) came to our room as a mystery reader! She read us a funny story called Mustache Baby that brought a lot of giggles. Thank you Emma for reading to us!

POPCORN WORDS: by, my, one

READING: This week during reading, we made connections to characters in our books by thinking…”Has that ever happened to me?” We talked about something special breaking or getting/wanting a pet. We thought…”Has that ever happened to me?” Then we learned more about characters in the books we read. We read more Froggy books and compared the adventures Froggy goes on in different books. Then we compared two different characters in an Elephant and Piggie book. We noticed what was the same about them and what was different. We ended the week comparing different characters in different books and finding things they had in common and things that were different.

WRITING: During writing this week, we wrote another small moment story. It was fun to share our stories with our friends!

MATH: This week during math, we learned more about teen numbers – we drew out the teen number, found the partners for the teen number and wrote the equation for the teen number. We compared more numbers – finding the number that is L (less), G (greater) or E (equal). We also started to compare length and height in objects as well as comparing weight in objects. We are still working on adding and subtracting numbers too!
